The Timeline of River Song

Mapping the non-linear life of Melody Pond — from Demons Run to the Library — against the Doctor's own journey through time.

December 1, 2015 · by Daniel Whitaker

We've been (un)lucky enough to have River Song accompany us and the Doctor for a long while now. But whereas we follow the Doctor's chronological timeline, River follows her own — a far more tangled path. This guide traces her story in the order she experienced it.

"Hello, sweetie." — River Song

River's Chronological Journey

  1. Born at Demons Run Conceived aboard the TARDIS and born at the asteroid Demons Run, Melody Pond is taken by Madame Kovarian and the Silence to be raised as a weapon against the Doctor.
  2. Childhood with the Silence Conditioned in an orphanage and inside an astronaut suit, young Melody is programmed to kill the Doctor. She escapes briefly to 1969 Florida, regenerating in a New York alleyway.
  3. Mels Zucker — Leadworth Years Regenerated into a young girl, she grows up alongside her own parents, Amy and Rory, as their childhood friend Mels. She knows exactly who they are — they don't know her.
  4. Regeneration into River Song After being shot in 1930s Berlin, Mels regenerates into the form the Doctor will come to know best. She reveals her identity to Amy and Rory and sacrifices a regeneration to save the Doctor from poisoning.
  5. Studying for a Doctorate Imprisoned at Stormcage for killing the Doctor — a crime she hasn't yet committed from her perspective — River studies archaeology, eventually earning the title of Professor.
  6. Adventures with the Doctor Across countless encounters, River and the Doctor meet in reverse order. Their diaries become a running joke — and a poignant reminder that every meeting brings one closer to the end for the other.
  7. The Singing Towers of Darillium The Doctor takes River to see the Singing Towers. This is their final night together from her perspective — a date that lasts twenty-four years.
  8. The Library River meets the Tenth Doctor, who has no idea who she is. She sacrifices herself to save thousands, and the Doctor uploads her consciousness to the Library's data core — where she lives on.
