It’s a terrible day that will inevitably arrive at some point; the day that Peter Capaldi leaves the TARDIS and lets someone else fly around through time and space. Could Series 10 be Peter Capaldi’s departing series however? A lot of little things could hint to this sadly being the case. Let’s have a look at why I think that the Twelfth Doctor could regenerate sooner rather than later.
We should really start with the man himself, Peter Capaldi. Whilst doing press for The Husbands of River Song, Capaldi said to The Telegraph;
“This could be my final year…It’s terrifying. I love Doctor Who but it can be quite an insular world and I do want to do other things. There will come a time when this is over. But I knew that when I started. I was thinking about my regeneration scene from the outset. That’s my terrible melancholic nature. When you accept the job you know there will come a day, inevitably, when you’ll be saying goodbye.”
This would make sense as both the Tenth and the Eleventh Doctor’s did three full series and it seemed like a reasonable amount of time for any Doctor to stay, however I feel that we could really do with at least another two series of Capaldi’s Doctor as it felt like Series 8 was really the Doctor coming into himself fully and discovering who he is.
Next we should look at the fact that Steven Moffat is supposedly ‘actively engaged’ in the search for a new showrunner. Now, correct me if I’m wrong but this whole situation seems familiar… cast your mind back to the days of old when Russell T Davies was the showrunner, he announced he’d leave after writing the episodes for 2009; he departed with his second Doctor, David Tennant. Would it not be similar and a proven formula for a showrunner of Doctor Who to spend time writing for two Doctor’s and leaving with the second, letting the show get a whole new leading crew? The problem with writing for Doctor Who so regularly is that you would feel pressurised in coming up with constantly new and interesting ideas that tops anything you’ve ever done before, which can ultimately take its toll on you creatively.
Finally, there’s the fact that Series 10 will see a new companion join the Doctor; should the new showrunner not want to start completely from scratch as Moffat did, they’d probably have the option of keeping the Series 10 companion during Series 11 meaning that it would be a more gradual transition from the old to the new. Of course, they could decide that they only want this companion for one series like the Martha and Donna, and it would be a completely fresh slate, but only time will tell…
What do you think? Will Peter Capaldi stay after Series 10 or do you think he’ll leave? Do you think Steven Moffat will have found a new suitable showrunner before the beginning of Series 11? Let us know in the comments below.
