The Defining Speeches of Classic Who

FirstDoctor Who has some cracking speeches in it, and it’s my belief that each Doctor has a speech that sums up their era, a speech that makes that Doctor The Doctor. Continuing on from my previous article, The Defining Speeches of New Who, this edition looks at all the classic series Doctors, and what, in my opinion, is their best speech.

The First Doctor– S2E2 ‘The Dalek Invasion of Earth’
“During all the years I’ve been taking care of you, you in return have been taking care of me. You are still my grandchild and always will be. But now, you’re a woman too. I want you to belong somewhere, to have roots of your own. With David you will be able to find those roots and live normally like any woman should do. Believe me, my dear, your future lies with David and not with a silly old buffer like me. One day, I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine. Goodbye, Susan. Goodbye, my dear.”

The Second Doctor– S5E4 ‘The Enemy of The World’
“They’re human beings, if that’s what you mean. Indulging their favorite pastime of trying to destroy each other.”

The Third Doctor– S10E4 ‘Planet of The Daleks’
“Courage isn’t just a matter of not being frightened, you know. It’s being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway.”

The Fourth Doctor– S12E4 ‘Genesis of The Daleks’
“Well, the final responsibility is mine. And mine alone. You see, if someone who knew the future pointed out a child to you and told you that that child would grow up totally evil to be a ruthless dictator who would destroy millions of lives… could you then kill that child? Do I have the right? Simply touch one wire against the other, and it’s it? The Daleks cease to exist? Hundreds of millions of people, thousands of generations, can live without fear, in peace, and never even know the word ‘Dalek’? But if I kill, wipe out a whole intelligent life form, then I’d become like them. I’d be no better than the Daleks.”

The Fifth Doctor– S21E3- ‘Frontios’
“Oh, marvellous. You’re going to kill me. What a finely tuned response to the situation.”

The Sixth Doctor– S23E4 ‘The Ultimate Foe’
“In all my travelling throughout the universe, I have battled against evil, against power-mad conspirators. I should have stayed here. The oldest civilisation: decadent, degenerate, and rotten to the core. Power-mad conspirators, Daleks, Sontarans, Cybermen – they’re still in the nursery compared to us. Ten million years of absolute power. That’s what it takes to be really corrupt.”

The Seventh Doctor– S26E4 ‘Survival’
“There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea’s asleep, and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there’s danger, somewhere there’s injustice, and somewhere else the tea’s getting cold. Come on, Ace. We’ve got work to do.”

The Eighth Doctor– ‘The Night of The Doctor
“Four minutes? That’s ages. What if I get bored or need a television, couple of books. Anyone for chess? Bring me knitting.”

BONUS- The War Doctor- ‘The Day of The Doctor’
“Great men are forged in fire, it is the privilege of a lesser man to light the flame”
